  • I Love (Hate) Stuff: An Update on the Cleanse

I’m two months into my buying cleanse and something amazing is happening: I’m finding more peace in the absence of things. There’s space, both literally in my day (seriously I wasted as much time plotting and considering shopping as I did actually pulling out my wallet) and in my head.
As much as I love stuff, I have to admit, shopping also gives me intense anxiety. I can’t tell you how many times I have obsessed over finding the perfect dining room rug or little black dress and how much time I have wasted doing it. Last night, my husband asked me what I am doing with all my extra time. “I’m actually doing the things that really make me happy: painting, sewing, reading…honestly, even when I’m just staring out into space it’s still time better spent.

I don’t want to pat myself on the back too much- a three month shopping hiatus does not the next Mother Theresa make. But it’s something. And how often do we decide to do nothing instead of something because our something seems so small? I know I do that all the time.

So here we go! One more month of no clothing, accessories or shoes to go and then I get to slowly introduce one (vintage or independently made only!) piece a month back into my shopping diet for the next three months.

Shopping sometimes will gives us happiness, but sometimes it also makes us unhappy, especially when we buy some useless stuff. Hope u enjoy shopping in ur life!
