Curtains For Me

Many of the windows in our new place are over old radiators and it was really tough to figure out curtains for them. I love a curtain that puddles on the floor but it just seemed like a scary fire hazard.
I had this one big panel I got at an Anthro sample sale and used that as my base, cut some of the details apart and then added canvas and lined it with a ticking stripe. The idea was that they would look like modern fabric wall hangings instead of curtains.
A little detail we added later: when we put our air conditioning unit in, we added eye hooks to the end of the dowels at the end of the curtain then hooks in the wall. You can pull the curtain up and see the striped fabric on the back.

Carlie Armstrong is a Portland based photorapher; work.space is her latest project, a series of photo essays of the places where artists and makers get things done. Her photos perfectly capture the DIY spirit of Portland, particulrly because she chose to shoot completely in film. Looking at other people's work spaces is always a voyeuristic pleasure and it's great how unstyled the spaces are- sometimes scrappy and messy but always real and beautiful. Don't you hate when magazines show workspaces that look like they have never been worked in?
A nice side effect of looking at her photos: getting to know so many new-to-me artists! Since I am always on the look out for artists and makers, this website is like a treasure trove of inspiration.

White Cube

I have to admit: I have never, ever in my life wanted white walls. So it's a little weird to be completely obsessed with white right now. The Mr. and I currently live in a very brown house; it's all brown floors, brown stairs, brown couch (what? I bought it before we moved!) and white walls seem like the only thing to combat the sea of brown. Not taupe, eggshell, cream, just white white white. I've been pinning and saving any inspiration I can find with white walls. Here are a few favorites below...

Oh, and the color we picked? Snowbound by Sherwin Williams. Just a teensy bit creamier than pure white.
